FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about booking, treatments, skincare and visiting our spas.
Booking
How do I book an appointment?
Book online any time with the Book Appointment button, or call the spa directly. All treatments are by appointment.
Book an appointment →Why do you ask for a card when I book?
A card holds your appointment. It is kept on file to reserve your time and is not charged when you book.
Which spa should I book?
We have spas in Midtown New York, Dumbo Brooklyn and West Hollywood. The booking page suggests the spa nearest to you, and you can switch at any time.
See all spas →Do packages save money?
Yes. Larger packages give a bigger discount per service, so a package is a good choice if you plan to come back several times.
Facials and treatments
Which facial is best for my skin?
It depends on your skin type and goals. If you are unsure, take the Skin Code Quiz, or simply book and we will review your skin at the start of your visit and recommend the best fit.
Take the Skin Code Quiz →What is the difference between the facials?
Each facial targets different concerns. The Oxygen Purifying Facial focuses on a deep cleanse followed by hydration. The Triple Crown Facial is anti-aging, lifting and sculpting. We can adjust your treatment during your visit if needed.
Browse treatments →Does the Triple Crown Facial include extractions?
No. If you have congestion or want extractions, add a half hour cleanse so there is time to prepare the skin properly. You can also add a light chemical peel to any facial.
How often should I get a facial?
Every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal for most people. Regular facials keep skin healthy, help your products work better and address concerns early.
How long do facial results last?
Usually several weeks, depending on your skin and routine. Book your next facial within 6 weeks and use the at-home products your esthetician recommends to keep results going.
What does microcurrent do?
Microcurrent uses low-level electrical currents to stimulate the facial muscles. It lifts and tones, improves contour and softens fine lines, with no downtime, so it works well before an event.
What are the benefits of red light therapy?
Red light therapy speeds healing, reduces inflammation and boosts collagen. Low-level red and infrared light is absorbed by your cells and triggers energy production.
Is there downtime with the add-on peel?
No. It is a gentle exfoliation. You may see slight rosiness right after, which fades within the day.
XERF
Is it normal not to see XERF results right away?
Yes. XERF uses controlled heat to signal your skin to make new collagen, and that takes time. Skin keeps improving week after week.
How many XERF treatments do I need?
We usually recommend 3 treatments. Depending on skin laxity and goals, a longer series may help, and results keep building as collagen remodels.
Can I get Botox or filler with XERF?
Yes. Botox can be done right after XERF, and filler is usually best after XERF. If you already have Botox or filler, wait about 2 to 4 weeks before XERF so it can settle.
Will XERF melt my filler?
No, not with the right settings. XERF tightens skin and stimulates collagen, and we will guide timing based on where your filler is.
Can I combine microneedling with XERF?
Yes. Microneedling pairs well with XERF to improve texture, pores, fine lines and overall glow.
Skincare and products
Are Joanna Vargas products clean?
Joanna formulates her skincare with organically sourced, plant-based ingredients so it is both safe and effective.
Shop skincare →Can I subscribe to my favorite products?
Yes. Many products offer a subscription so they arrive on a schedule you choose. You can also buy them one time.
What are the most important steps in a skincare routine?
Cleanser, moisturizer and daily sunscreen. Consistency matters most: a simple routine done every day beats many products used now and then.
Do I need sunscreen every day?
Yes. UV exposure speeds up aging and causes wrinkles, dark spots and collagen loss. Daily sunscreen also lowers your risk of skin cancer.
How often should I exfoliate?
Once a week for most people. Some skin can handle twice weekly in summer. Sensitive skin should exfoliate less and gently, since over-exfoliating damages the skin barrier.
How do I care for sensitive skin?
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and a soothing moisturizer, exfoliate no more than once a week, avoid harsh or heavily scented products, and wash with lukewarm water.
Sensitive skin guide →How can I make large pores look smaller?
Pore size is mostly genetic, but oil, sun damage and aging make pores more visible. Cleanse twice daily, exfoliate regularly, use a retinoid if right for you, wear sunscreen and change pillowcases often.
Pores guide →What helps dark spots?
Dark spots usually come from sun, inflammation or aging. Professional treatments can even out tone, and daily sunscreen prevents new spots.
Dark spots guide →How do I find out my skin type?
A professional consultation is best. An esthetician looks at your skin under magnification and recommends the right treatments and products. The Skin Code Quiz is a good place to start.
Take the Skin Code Quiz →Spa visits
When should I arrive?
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to check in and settle in.
Should I come with a clean face?
It helps, but it is not required. We cleanse before every facial.
What should I tell my esthetician?
Let us know about any medications, allergies or recent procedures before your treatment.
Where are the spas?
501 Fifth Avenue in Midtown New York, 10 Jay Street in Dumbo Brooklyn, and 1107 N. Kings Road in West Hollywood. Each spa page has directions, parking and hours.
