XERF vs Thermage

XERF and Thermage both use radiofrequency, but the treatments feel different. Thermage uses a deeper single-pass approach, while XERF builds heat gradually over several passes. We prefer XERF for clients who value comfort, minimal recovery and a refreshed look soon after the appointment.

Our approach

XERF

The even, comfortable heat

XERF is the monopolar radiofrequency treatment offered at all three Joanna Vargas spas. Its handpiece moves slowly across the skin, keeping heat at a comfortable, uniform level so the full session stays relaxing while collagen remodels.

Ideal for

Fine lines, texture, early laxity and a same-day glow.

How it works

Monopolar radiofrequency warms the upper dermis evenly, pass after comfortable pass.

Downtime

None. Mild flushing fades within about 30 minutes.

Sessions

A short series builds the best result, then seasonal maintenance keeps it.

Thermage

The single deep pass

Thermage covers the treatment area with one deeper broadband radiofrequency pass. The heat peaks are stronger, sessions are shorter, and it is often selected for larger or looser areas beyond the face.

Ideal for

Moderate laxity on the face and body in a single appointment.

How it works

Broadband radiofrequency heats deeper tissue in one sweeping pass.

Downtime

None to minimal, though the deeper heat can feel intense during treatment.

Sessions

Usually one treatment, with tightening appearing over two to six months.

The difference

Why XERF is the better choice

These treatments use the same general technology in different ways. XERF applies heat gradually, which makes it our preferred option for a more comfortable appointment.

  • Heat delivery: XERF builds warmth through repeated passes. Thermage uses stronger heat at greater depth in a shorter sequence.
  • Timing: XERF can give the skin a refreshed appearance soon after treatment, while collagen remodeling continues over time.
  • Recovery: Mild flushing after XERF usually fades quickly, and normal activities can resume right away.
  • Suitability: We assess your skin and goals before recommending XERF or another treatment.

Most clients find XERF much more comfortable. It keeps heat at a warm, even level for the whole session, while Thermage delivers hotter bursts to finish in fewer passes.

Which gives faster results?

XERF shows a visible glow and firmness within days, then keeps building for about three months. Thermage results arrive more slowly, typically over two to six months from the single session.
